Back to school can be a tough time for everyone from elementary to adulthood. Things are new, expectations are unknown, new routines to figure out, not to mention the social component to it! Who will I sit with at lunch? Will I know anyone in my dorm? What will my classes be like? Getting back into the swing of things can be difficult. Here are some things you can do to make the transition better.
10 Strategies to Manage Back to School Anxiety
Develop healthy routines: reasonable waking/sleeping hours, time for homework, leisure time, movement time, time spent with loved ones
Organize your space: bedroom, bathroom, homework area, etc
Eat healthy foods & drink water
Limit screen time
Write down five positive truths about yourself and reference them
Use tools and routines to support the things that can be difficult
Develop appropriate coping strategies for dealing with hard things
Identify your community of people and reach out to them
Talk about anxieties with trusted adults, family and friends
Know that you are not alone, most people feel this way too!
Doing these things won’t make all of your anxieties go away, but they will be able to lessen the impact it has on you. This doesn’t just apply to going back to school. These strategies can be used by everyone throughout their lives. It’s not about making negative thoughts and feelings go away, it’s about how we manage it within the context of our lives.
