What are your FACTS??

I’m sure you’ve seen graphics online that say something like, “Don’t believe everything you think.” While this is easier said than done, our minds often make connections and develop thoughts that may or may not be true. It's up to us to determine our truths and not let our minds decide for us.

When such thoughts arise, I challenge you to ignore, delete, or discard the nonsense! Then, have a new thought based on the facts of the situation. For example, if you think, “You can’t do this; you need more practice, better equipment, you’re not ready, etc.,” replace that with, “I know and believe that I can do this and am capable!”

Most of the time, it’s literally MIND OVER MATTER!

Change the relationship you have with your thoughts. This requires awareness and practice. When you're confronted with an uncomfortable thought or memory, it’s up to you to decide whether to let it affect you. What can you do to learn to sit with an uncomfortable thought or feeling?

1. Acknowledge the uncomfortable thought.

2. Decide if you have the capacity to address it at this moment.

  - If you have the capacity: Set a timer for the amount of time you want to spend on it. Choose a coping strategy you’ll use when needed and decide on a self-care activity for afterward (e.g., a warm cup of tea, talking to a friend, spending time with a pet).

- If you don’t have the capacity: Acknowledge the uncomfortable thought and perhaps say to yourself, “Not now.” Then, use a coping strategy (that works) that helps you return to your baseline.

KNOW YOUR FACTS!

What are some facts about yourself? List your non-judgmental truths!

For example, you might be kind, funny, compassionate, loving, or full of adventure! How do others know these things about you? This can come through in your actions, words, interactions with others, and the things you prioritize.

If you're having difficulty identifying your facts, ask a friend!

One exercise I like is asking people to give three positive words that describe you. This can be so powerful! Once you've collected responses, put them into a word cloud, collage, phone lock screen, notebook, sticky note, or anywhere you’ll see them.

Most importantly, BELIEVE THEM!

Be well 💜
